People are easily fooled. I read all these glowing reviews. I tried it when they first opened. I read up on the place and found out it was a chain but figured Id still try it. Plus their bold sign of "best gyro in town" kept calling me. Dont make bold statements you cant live up to. Had to try the gyro since it is the main specialty. Lettuce on a gyro? Uh...no. It was solid in taste. Light on meat. Solid wont bring me back regularly though at these prices and overall choices. I will stick to Little Daddys who has the best gyro and pita bread. Im always skeptical of places w few photos. Especially whn half the pics are posted by the business. I always look for that slick move. Been open over a year and only 4 pics???

Not bad for something quick to go. I had the power bowl with chicken. My only gripe is that I wish they didn't premake the quinoa with tomatoes in it...I have an allergy and had to pick them out which was annoying. However the bowl and chicken were pretty tasty.

They have a lot of options to choose from. You can get different meat in a wrap, a rice bowl, or on salad. Meat is extra on a salad! The establishment is clean and the staff is friendly. I ordered the rice bowl, it was ok. I would of liked my rice bowl to have less raw vegetables and more cooked vegetables. Oh well, next time I will get grilled veggies on my rice bowl instead of grilled chicken. The chicken was very dry. Maybe I should take into account that it was at the end of the day. Overall, I would be back. It's a quick and easy way to get some good Mediterranean food.

Great idea, great food. I really like the "build your own" approach to Greek salads & sandwiches.

Wow, this place is fantastic! The gyros are huge and very tasty! We got a side Greek salad, a spinach pie along with the kids gyro, which came with a side and a beverage. What a great deal! I will definitely eat here again when I'm in town.

We've continued to buy THE WORLD'S GREATEST GYROS from Kalamata at least once a week or so, so I thought I'd update my review! First off, I HAVE noticed a slight difference in the dryness of the meat...not saying it's perfect (or WORLD'S GREATEST) yet, but they've obviously been paying attention to feedback from "somewhere," and I've noticed an improvement. Second, they've chucked the clunky plastic containers in favor of a paper sheath which allows you to NOM NOM on your gyros without unnecessary landfill additions. Good on them for that! Third, since my first review, I've subsequently requested extra sauce ALSO on the side (make sure you clarify this, or your gyro will have NO sauce on it) and they've happily obliged at no additional cost. For a sauce junkie like myself, this makes me very happy! Finally, though...we still haven't eaten-in at Kalamata since we live so close, but every time we ramble in for our to-go, the place is EMPTY...it makes me worry a bit that this place may not be long for this world! I hope they hang in there, but...it's a worry!

Better than expected! - Greek salad with chicken is excellent! Big portion, and both the original and creamy dressings are good. The pita bread was warm and soft, which is hard to come by sometimes. - Lamb gyro was good flavor wise but the meat was dry. Have had better at Kouzina. - Sampled the quinoa and will try the full dish next time. Delicious and healthy! Will definitely come back!

Stopped in for some take out- they provided what I expected since I have been there before. Staff was very friendly and engaging, plus quick. We will be back!

This place boldly proclaims to have the best gyros around when they don't even have the best gyros on the block. I tried for myself this past weekend courtesy of a Groupon - but even with the $7 discount, I probably should have passed. First the service was slow. The computers were down and they were tallying Groupon's by hand. Next, I was unhappy with the menu. Definitely not authentic Greek like Kouzina or even a coney island. They have all these extra sauces and items that you won't find at a real Greek restaurant (like how Taco Bell has Crunchwrap Supremes). They really should just stick to the basics. Anyway, I ordered a pork gyro with greek barbeque which is apparently just watered down Open Pit sauce. It was drowning my pork which was also dried out and old. Real old. Some of the dryest meat I have ever eaten. The pita was okay, but the overall portion size was poor. I paid 75 cents more to add "greek fries" to my gyro. I assumed this meant feta, etc. Nope it meant 6 fries, plus oil. Nasty. Also ordered a side of "donkey fries" which probably indicates I am donkey for even trying them. About $2.50 for some generic fries and oil. Nobody wants to eat fries that have already been deep fried and dip them in oil. Anyway, my fiance had chicken. It was better, but the portion size was still bad. Will not return. You should go elsewhere.

Went to the Woodward Dream Cruise with one of my friends as we were sitting down in our chairs at 14 Mile and Woodward checking out all the old vintage cars we decided we were hungry. Started walking towards 13 Mile Road and across the street there was Kalamata Greek Grill, so we decided on that restaurant, but the only problem is that we had to walk a half a mile down where there was a light and we could safely cross the road. There were plenty of police out and if we jay walked I am sure we would have been given a ticket! Oh well, we will get our daily walk in. Finally got to Kalamata Greek Grill and you order - sort of like a deli. And at the end of the counter you get your food. I ordered a lamb and beef mix gyro. OMG, it was so flavorful and delicious. There were quite a few customers there, but there still was seating available for us. Gobbled down our food, used the restrooms and went back outside to walk to our lawn chairs at the end of 14 Mile & Woodward. Had a great time and Kalamata was able to fulfill our needs as far as good food goes!

I've driven past Kalamata so many times, that once I finally moved to the area I knew I had to check it out. Kalamata is a cool concept. It's very much like the Qdoba's and Chipotles of the world, but with gyros! You can order your gyro as a wrap, bowl, or power bowl. I chose the chicken gyro wrap Detroit style (lettuce, tomato, feta and creamy greek.). The sandwich was really flavorful and I was in and out with my carryout order in five minutes. I will definitely be back to try the other items on the menu.

Came around lunchtime. The place was a mess. I got the quinoa power bowl with lamb. The lamb was good but the quinoa was stale. We only came here because La Marsa was too far away and we were hungry. It wasn't very good. I wish we had just drove a bit longer.

Good prices, quick service, friendly staff. Went with the chicken plate. The rice pilaf was my favorite item.

Great place. Very friendly and helpful staff, clean, tasty food w lots of options, great view of Woodward-crucial for out-of- towner here for the Dream Cruise. Only thing from a 5, no jalapeño's, and no ketchup or red hot sauce at the table. Otherwise a winner!

  • Amy B.

Better than fast food. I don't each much meat but can't really pass up their lamb gyro, Detroit style. Sitting at the bar facing Woodward is a treat too. Clean and fast. They've got fast casual down and I can easily see this business branching out.

  • Donna M.

I so want this place to be good and keep going back to nothing but disappointment. The lamb meat today was cold and dry in the Greek Power Bowl. Kalamata does not even compare to the downtown RO Greek Street Food Place (Koutzina, I think), that is wonderful.

unbelievably...rude staff! the staff has not learned its lesson on common manners. my friend, whom introduced me to this place had a talk with the owner "tom" and advised "tom" how rude his staff was. (our first visit, early march 2015) (second visit) sunday, march 29th 2015...friends and i had a late lunch at royal oak location....the place had light traffic, maybe 2 people eating inside....staff does not greet you....no one states "welcome"...no one says "thank you" or "enjoy"..... then the staff gets in a hurtle and starts talking about my friends and i! they knew it was us who complained to "tom" about the prior rude service! food was good, but staff ruined the mood! staff needs major training on common manners! unbelievable how they made us feel! we will never visit this place again!

Healthy food at a reasonable price. Had the power bowl with grilled chicken. Kind of wish they made a warm version, but it was awesome nonetheless.

It was not too bad actually, and I was skeptical. The lemon rice soup was one of the best I have had, and I am a soup snob. I got the Quinoa bowl with chicken and it was quite tasty. The chicken was a little dry, but it was totally edible. I might have stuck with the veggie bowl though in retro. The quinoa had yummy, diced vegies that added a lot of flavor. Hubby got the combo with lamb and pork. The sauce they gave him WAS TO DIE FOR. I put just a dab on my chicken. Yummmy. The meat was way too dry for me but I am pretty picky there too. Hubby ate it up and liked it. In a hurry or for convenience I would pop in for lunch. If I want REAL Greek food, I am at Athens Souvlaki in Southfield.

I really was not expecting much from this restaurant. The salad was much better than I was expecting. I will be back although I don't like to look of the restaurant. Prices seemed okay.

Sharp decor and fresh food. I'm kind of annoyed that the Greek salad doesn't come with a side of pita bread. The salad isn't cheap, especially when you add meat. So why not include a piece of bread? I really liked the sandwiches and the Greek quinoa and think I might stick with those next time.

Delicious food! Just tried the Village Salad today and it's my new favorite lunch. Despite not having any lettuce it was a great salad with fresh ingredients and I added chicken which is always delicious here. I usually get the original pita with chicken and feta and that is amazing as well. Will definitely be back!!

Our first visit will bring us back again. I love all the options for all kinds of diets. Great food, friendly service. We were all pleased, but the rice, lemon rice soup, Greek Quiona, and Greek salad were sure winner. The owner heard it was my birthday and he gave us two baklava, the most awesome I have ever had!

Every time I go their they mess up my order , take the extra time your going to spend going back to fix your order and go to the one on crooks and big beaver, but over all great food ...when they get it right!

This place is great! The gyros are huge, so tasty and packed with meat. The hummus and "chips" was really good, too. The hummus was thicker, just the way I like it, not swimming in oil. And the "chips" was lightly baked pita bread that was delicious. Will definitely try more when I'm back in town. Wish there was one closer!

I did not know that this was part of a franchise until I went to view the menu online. So I was hesitant, well because...Greek franchise. The place is spotless, if not a bit cold inside. I immediate thought "Greek Chipolte." The menu offers an array of variety when it comes to customizing your meal. I opted for the Greek meatballs and my son the gyros. Their banner on the store advertised the Best Gyros in Town, which is a bold statement. First the good news: the Greek meatballs had a lot of flavor, the rice side dish was nicely seasoned. The pita bread was fresh and warm, and the green beans and tomato sauce was good as well. My son, who only ever orders gyro lately, took three bites and was done. When I finished my lunch, I went to finish his, but could see why he'd stopped. The gyros was shaved so thin that it was dry. I mean flaking dry...and salty. After a few bites, I had emptied my water glass. The portion was generous, just not very good. I'm sure I will try it again sometime, without my son, but it was his food quality that kept this from raking any higher than 3 stars.

The food is simple, fresh, and authentic. It's hard to find food that tastes homemade, however, here you can find it. All of the ingredients taste extremely fresh like they were picked from the backyard, bot from a Sysco truck. Also, the value of this place is well worth making Kalamata a weekly meal.

  • Kelly D.

SO GOOD! I eat here 3 times a week usually. It is fresh, it is easy to pick up, and there are so many choices. It is like Subway (because you can customize everything) just a million times better. Very reasonable prices and good portion size. Staff is super friendly and nice. GREAT PLACE! I will never eat at Leos again.

Fantastic! Good, fresh food. Clean and the staff is always friendly. Affordable. I have been to both this location and the Troy one. Both are worth a visit. No need to forgo the unhealthy fast food chain anymore.

Kalamata Royal Oak opened yesterday. I just happened to be on my way to Birmingham with my daughter and noticed Kalamata was opened for business, so we thought we'd give it a try. We were happily greeted at the door and faced with a huge menu posted in front of us on the wall. Thankfully, the gal taking our order offered help right away. We were originally going to order just salads, but voiced aloud that we'd like some sides as well. Our helper thankfully suggested The Vegetarian, for $8.95 we got a choice of 4 sides. I got a greek salad, a spinach pie, quinoa and grilled veggies with a pita bread. My daughter ordered the salad, quinoa, the lemon rice soup and the Greek fries. Our meals arrived quickly as their were plenty of employees at the ready. All in all, we were very pleased with our lunches. We both really liked our salads and the Greek Quinoa. There were generous, flavorful portions of both. My daughter loved the soup, although on the downside, it's served in a foam bowl with regular silverware. There is something weird about eating from a foam bowl with metal ware. We thought they should just offer plastic, especially since some of the silverware was not the cleanest. My daughter had to make another trip to the silverware bin to find a cleaner table service. We thought they should either have all regular dishes and silverware or all plastic and paper--not a mix of the two. I liked my spinach pie, even though it was a tad on the small side, a small triangle of two or three bites at most, it was more like an appetizer sized pie. You can order 3 pies for $5.99, which is an ok deal, I guess I enjoyed the grilled veggies. They were crisp and flavorful, not mushy, like some restaurants serve. My daughter's Greek fries were a bit oily and she mentioned that she wished she had just ordered the regular fries. Not having had Greek fries, we chalked this up to Greek fries being a more oily type of fry rather than American fries. All in all, we liked Kalamata quite a bit! The décor is the kind of bare bones, clean, industrial look that is fashionable these days. I would have given it a five had it not been for the less than clean silverware and the extra greasy Greek fries. And, after all, it was only their second day of business, so overall, I'd say they are doing a pretty good job! We will be back!

Huge fan, huge. The Lemon rice soup is addictive and the chicken salad beats Olga's hands down. Their bread is amazing. I liked the lamb gyro but still prefer an Olga gyro.

4 stars = a B- in my book. Had the pork gyro. It was good, not great. On the small side and a little dry. If I came here really hungry I would need two to be full. Very clean throughout. I will be back to try some of their other offerings.

Kalamata Greek Grill, located right off of Woodward Avenue, provides fast greek-style food. It's a great place to take a quick lunch, and eat some fresh food. When I arrived, there was a wait of about 5-6 people in front of me, but the line seemed to move fast, helped by the 4-5 employees behind the counter, preparing orders as they came in. The menu is fairly easy to read, with a meal type to choose from, and condiments to select from to put on that type of meal. Though it may be a bit pricy, the food appears to be cut fresh, and the portions are sizable to justify the pricing. If nothing else, I recommend the Greek quinoa, rich with spices and feta. Oh also, the gyro meat...ahhh yeah!!

Nice little place for a quick lunch. It's pretty far for us to come from work, but the gyro I had tasted great. I don't understand why they were wearing bikinis over their clothes, but oh well. I also had a coupon for Free Greek fries, I added feta- they were just ok. I would definitely stop back in for a quick lunch of on the area.

had a Groupon so got a little of everything. The chicken plates was very good - tender chicken, fresh salad - rice a little crunchy - with decent tomato sauce - DID NOT REALIZE I had to order salad dressing and sauce of chicken - but ok plain. Got the trio of dipping sauces - the cucumber was delish - I am not a fan of feta but spiced feta was REALLY GOOD - the hummus a little on the dry side - pita chips reasonably toasted. Service fast and friendly. Forgot to add - was a little disappointed no tabbouleh or dessert

Fast, friendly and tasty. This was my first time and it won't be my last. I ordered the Greek Power Bowl added beets, creamy Greek, feta and chicken. Great flavors. The staff were nice, fast and very friendly.

We enjoy gyros with a greek salad and lemon rice soup on occasion. There are many places to eat a variety of greek foods however today was a miss. The soup, gyro, bread and chicken were lukewarm at best. This is a nice concept however because the meat was cool to touch it was dry. The soup, while it had a great taste, was room temp. The place had 4 men sitting around - not busy, so why not cut the meat to order? Grill the bread to order? It made the whole experience less than. Oh well. *5 stars for great staff and cleanliness

Solely based on food and service, they deserve four stars, but in today's health climate of obesity and heart disease, I'm subtracting two stars for NOT having nutritional information available either in the store NOR online. It's too bad because one of the more populated Weight watcher centers is a mile away and it's been easy for us to promote The Big Salad at 14 and Woodward. The Power Bowl at Kalamata, (quinoa base), seems like a healthy option, but without nutritional Information, it's difficult to say. There is also an option of gluten free sandwiched by choosing the lettuce wrap, which could also be a lower calorie option if you had the nutritional info on the proteins, toppings and sides.

Chipotle really created a buzz when it first got attention from consumers and the idea definitely took off. This restaurant follows the same exact layout and concept as chipotle however, the food choices are much different. You get the choice of a gyro, salad, or power bowl of course with a few other options. And each option is entitled to any veggie or sauce. I got the chicken Caesar gyro and made it my own after the chicken and Caesar dressing. The options are delicious for any entree choice. Diced olives, banana peppers, feta cheese etc. I'll be quite honest this is definitely my new place to eat when craving a quick delicious meal. I Will probably never go to chipotle if I had the choice between the two! Love this place definitely worth trying.

Well maybe the mistake was coming here for dinner. It's sort of like a Greek Version of Qdoba but not as good. Two of us got a gyro bowl, and a gyro with small salad. The gyro bowl had a ton of rice and quinoa, which is fine if you are trying to maximize your carb intake. Otherwise no. And the sliced gyro meat was dry and very bland. The gyro sandwich was also bland with very unimpressive fillings. All in all, I would choose Greek Islands in downtown Birmingham over Kalamata any time. This place might be better for lunch but they need to focus on vegetables a LOT more.

  • Ashraf M.

Dry food, mediocre service, bad experience. When the staff gets frustrated that a 6 year old doesn't understand the question "what kind of protein do you want?", there's a problem. They made ordering with kids very difficult. The lamb came out one step above beef jerky. The fries and spinach pie were good but not good enough for my kids to want to to back. It didn't seem like anyone was in charge as there were 4 girls who appeared to be in their high teens running the show. Poor management.

After working all day & a boatload of errands on Monday evening 5-5-14 , we cruised along Woodward , dwelling on all of the westside choices, craved a redcoat burger, but could not get in, then saw the newer Kalamata Greek Grill. I really wanted to try a Greek Power Bowl, except I wanted it minus tomatoes , as they are not so good out of season, BUT the quinioa ,tomatoes , feta were pre made & no substitutions allowed .. so We each ordered a Custom Built Gyro 1) was grilled chicken /Detroit Style 2) mine was slow roasted pork also Detroit Style They both were very large for the money spent, and with the amount of meat & pita we needed a little extra Greek Dressing which Sam gladly provided. My slow roasted pork , needed a lot of extra dressing as it seemed overcooked & dryer than one would expect, however it certainly was loaded with flavor. 4 stars , could have been 5 With 5-6 employees behind the counter, one would expect the dining area/counters/glass/trash bins etc. to be much cleaner than it was , especially at 7:45 on a Monday Night. But it was very good , low cost dining for sure.

I didn't have particularly high expectations for this restaurant, but my husband really wanted to check it out. I ended up loving it! It was basically a chipotle for gyros! I chose the "freerider" gyro, which meant that I picked my own ingredients (chicken, onions, green peppers and hummus). Absolutely delicious and really fresh-tasting. I was really happy with the experience. I did think the place was a little overpriced once you add in a side and a drink. So that's why I'm not giving it a full five stars. But I will definitely go back.

It's like chipotle's greek cousin with lots of selection.
